I think the repugnant conclusion may actually be just an artifact of oversimplification. Clearest argument I heard for it involved oscillating between subtly contradictory premises. If you set things up as an agent-based model, with incomplete information, something to represent the difficulty of enforcing complex policies on those who don't personally benefit therefrom, and basic physics stuff like conservation of mass, problem mostly goes away.
